Now that the summer is approaching and we are ready to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather we are all asking ourselves just how much sun exposure, if any, is healthy? With all the articles about covering up and not exposing ourselves to the sun's harmful rays, is it ever beneficial to be in the sun without protection? You may not know this but the sun provides our bodies with natural Vitamin D and Vitamin D is extremely important to our body in many ways. Vitamin D helps maintain bone density, healthy bone growth and the normal functioning of the nervous system. Having enough Vitamin D also can help lower certain cancer risks, such as breast, prostate and colorectal cancer. Vitamin D is vital in aiding the body’s absorption of calcium. (Without sufficient Vitamin D, calcium supplements are almost useless.) And on the flip side, not having enough Vitamin D in our bodies contributes to osteoporosis, as calcium absorption cannot be maximized. Not surprising, many people don't get enough Vitamin D. Firstly, there are very few foods that contain the vitamin naturally. So it is hard to get enough Vitamin D from food. Secondly, now that we are so careful not to go out into the sun without sunscreen, our skin cannot synthesize Vitamin D3, from the ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun. (According to the Linus Pauling Institute, the application of sunscreen with just an SPF factor of 8 reduces production of Vitamin D by 95%.) So how do we get natural Vitamin D from the sun without harming ourselves? Actually limited sun exposure several times a week will do the trick. Dr. Michael Holick, of Boston University, explains that limited sun exposure of 5-10 minutes three times a week, during the spring, summer and fall, during the mid-day from 11am to 2pm, on the face and arms, will provide enough Vitamin D for the individual. This sun exposure will also allow for storage of the excess Vitamin D during the winter, when the UVB rays will not reach some places.
